Synopsis:: -

Hello everyone,

First of all, I have to admit that I tried Windows Media Center 2005 a few weeks ago when I was extremely frustrated because I could not make MediaPortal to work in a decent way on my computer... Windows Media Center 2005 was easy to set up and configure, it is also somehow faster than MediaPortal (I own a very modest computer). But I did not like the way music was displayed and played... On the top of it I did not manage to make the TV to work... TV signal is very bad in my area, it is not my main concern to be honest...

Let's come back to the main point of this post: MediaPortal. I like MediaPortal. I'm lovin' it! Guys, you are doing such a good work!

I have a couple of questions to make you, they are actually my first two questions on this forum (hello world!).

1- How can you make the Green Button to work in Windows XP Pro? I would like it to load MediaPortal the way it loads Media Center in Windows Media Center 2005. I would like not to have to walk to the computer and load MediaCenter once I am seated in the sofa... Yes, I am very lazy!

2- How can you make the Electronic Program Guide to download the data it needs? I am now living in London (UK) and I cannot make it work. Any hint? The TV reception is bad, but I would like to make it work just to feel good. To be honest I do not watch TV, but it is sort of a challenge...

That'a all for today. I am looking forward for your help.

Thank you very much!

Trailboy.

Thanks for your quick answer Cheezey!

I am trying to get more familiar with the search facility, sometimes it gives back too many results and it is difficult to find what you really want... Thanks anyway!

I read the post on the link you sent me and some others. I am still a little bit confused, do i need both myblaster plugin and mptray application on my setup? (MP 0.2.0.0 RC2 on Windows XP Pro SP2). On some posts I read it looks like only mptray is needed... Is myblaster a plugin to control a Sky set top box (for example) with the MCE remote control?

I am thinking of buying a Microsoft MCE keyboard. I have already downloaded (not installed) the rollup updated that seems to be needed to use the keyboard. Is that the only update I need or are they any other drivers to install. I have read that on XP Home you need to do more stuff than in MCE and Pro.. Am I right?

I am sorry about all my questions, but sometimes my English is not good enough and makes me understand the wrong way (I am Italian).

If anyone from Spain is reading this, do you know any place better than www.alternate.es to get the Microsoft MCE keyboard? I need a Spanish keyboard since both my girlfriend and I write in Spanish and French too... We would like to be able to write things like ñ and ç without using ASCII codes...

Thanks everyone on this forum!

Best regards.

I managed to make it work, mptray works like a dream.
As soon as I get the Microsoft MCE keyboard I will try the rest.

You'll love the MCE keyboard - once you get used to it's nipple :shock:

Default Mptray deosnt seem to do anything

I try running with the various register options, and with no options at all. Nothing gets displayed in my console window, and no mptray.log file gets created. I put both the exe and dll in the same directory as mediaportal.exe. Any hints? Or is there source code somewhere so I can debug? Oh yes, I should mention that when I press the green button on my MCE 2005 US remote, nothing happens.

Thanks.

Does mptray.exe appear in the list of running processes (Task manager)?

Make sure that you only have one entry for mptray.exe in your registry.

Yes.

No, and it does not show up in the list of services either.

It shows up as
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"MediaPortal Shell"="C:\\Program Files\\Team MediaPortal\\MediaPortal\\mptray.exe"MediaPortal\MediaPortal\mptray.exe

and

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache]
"C:\\Program Files\\Team MediaPortal\\MediaPortal\\mptray.exe"=" "

and

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ORL\VNCHooks\Application_Prefs\mptray.exe]
"use_GetUpdateRect"=dword:00000001
"use_Timer"=dword:00000000
"use_KeyPress"=dword:00000001
"use_LButtonUp"=dword:00000001
"use_MButtonUp"=dword:00000001
"use_RButtonUp"=dword:00000001
"use_Deferral"=dword:00000001

and

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"MediaPortal Shell"="C:\\Program Files\\Team MediaPortal\\MediaPortal\\mptray.exe"
OK, I did a unregister and a unregister:all, then a register:all, rebooted and it is working now. I won't ask any questions, I'm happy. Thanks

Hi CodeMonkey,

You can get the source code from here. It helped me finding out all possible command line parameters. Here's a list of command line switches which afaik are actually doing something:
  • - /shell
    - /log
    - /kill
    - /register (same as /register:user)
    - /register:user (registers mptray in registry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER)
    - /register:all (registers mptray in registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE)
    - /register:both (register mptray in registry in both HKCU & HKLM)
    - /unregister (same as /unregister:user)
    - /unregister:user (removes mptray from registry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER)
    - /unregister:all (removes mptray from registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE)
    - /unregister:both (removes mptray from registry in both HKCU & HKLM)

If I do read the code right, you should try running it from a DOS box as follows:
Code:
mptray /shell /log
EDIT: Doh, I see you solved it already! :lol: Regard my post as a reference then...

Regards,
Michel

Hehe.

To expand on /shell a little... I tried minlogon in place of winlogon and found that I couldn't live without the niceties of the Windows Key shortcuts like Windows Key + E to start Explorer and Shift-Ctrl + Esc for Task Manager so specifying the /shell command line switch adds the support back. There are a couple of other shortcuts that I added such as Windows Key + K to kill MP, Windows Key + T to restore the Windows task bar and so on.

Regards,
Smirnuff.
