Music Database

Hi,

When picking apart the GUIMusic plugin, I saw something about a music database. I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on what its purpose is and a general overview of how it works. My first plugin is something that will emulate the My Music already built. I feel this will give me great insight into developing for Mediaportal and am not really doing it for its functionality.

I am wondering if the music database could be helpful, but I am not 100% sure how it works or what it is used for exactly. Thanks.

The Music database is used to hold information for all supported music files (mp3, wma, ogg, etc.) found in the Shares you specified. a Scan reads Tag information out of the various formats, like Artist, Genre, Album, etc., and stores it in the Database.
Then MP is using the database to present the music collection in various ways, like "Show by Artist" or "Show by Genre" and it allows to search on this criteria.
An ability you won't have when you just look on the files alone.

Then is my question..

which id tag does it read: ID3 or ID3v2
and which would be better to use?

We always use ID3v2 and fall back to ID3v1 if a v2 is not present.
So start using ID3v2 if possible
