Question 1080P content is smooth in windows media player and choppy in mediaportal

CPU - AMD 64 1.8ghz / 1.5gb ram / XP Pro SP3 / Mediaportal 1 rc2 / ATI Radeon 3450 - 512mb / h.264 codec is coreavc

Not sure where to put this but here goes.. media portal chokes on mkv container files with 1080p content, very choppy frame rate at 23.5 and jitter around 19, with cpu at 99% - but windows media player plays it fine - in fact, cpu usage is around 20% - which tells me that it is being acceleratred by the video card - ATI 3450. 720p is similar, but works ok in media portal - cpu usage is around 70% but the frame rate is at 23.9 and jitter is only 1 or 2 - through media player, cpu usage is around 10-15%. Why is media player so smooth and mediaportal so choppy?

Of course I say all of this and the recent bourne identity backup that I am playing craps out all together - so my guess is there is a problem with its encoding..

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

thanks

jim

Ok. Possible sucking eggs stuff here.

Coreavc is a software decoder. It will max out your CPU doing h.264 stuff. To get the most out of your ATi card, you need another codec such as from PowerDVD Ultra.

Not sure how Windows Media Player is coping - it must be using something other that Coreavc.

What is the decoder setup for h.264 in MediaPortal? Try something else (if you have it).

huckster thanks for the ideas - I checked in file properties while the mkv files were playing in windows media player and it appears to be using the mpc video decoder - so when i set media portal to mpc video decoder - I get nothing but a blank screen. I have a copy of power dvd that I may try. out of all the decoders I have - coreavc works the best in media portal.

thanks

MPC is an audio codec isn't it...? MediaPortal comes with MPV (again from memory as I'm not at home) and this is MPEG-2 only. Have a hunt around on the MP wiki etc. for codec-related posts.

Have u tryed ffdshow? Your computer should be good enough to handle it, and ffdshow is supposed to run "smoother" than coreavc if you install it right. Uninstall all your codec packs and install using this guide: Index of /~mitreski
Worked for me...

Have a try and report back...

thanks for the link MrHauglan - nice guide on how to set up ffdshow - I have tired it and it too chokes on 1080p content much like coreavc does - the best so far has been hardware accelerated MPC (SourceForge.net: MPC - Homecinema) via windows media player - I guess I will try and tweak fdshow a little more and see what I can do.. I would love to know if there is a way to get the mpc codec to work in media portal..
