Hi Steen,

please keep in mind that TVE3 is still beta. So this comparison of i-loop more likely shows the general arguments pro and contra the engines. Be sure that non-beta TVE3 will probably have all the functions you mentioned. And that it sounds like that its too much pro TVE3...what can I say...it because TVE3 is superior :-)

Paloema

And btw: What is more? :-P

It would be nice if someone could help with the development a little bit (at least) as I have lately found it really hard to get any motivation with working with the subtitles. Also the spring is coming, so it's possible that there will be even less motivation.

I love the new tv server, its by far the best piece of software available for htpc's the features available with the lastest (and most stable release so far) are in my opinion second to none, so if you still havent tryed the new tv sever yet its really time you did, I update it every other day and I thinks its nearly ready for a stable release.

I would love to use the new TVServer, but the last two times I checked, it did not support my tuner (ATI 550). Now that I have Vista Ultimate with the new MCE, I might switch (testing right now).

Prolly not, though

I tried it but found it slow and i found it way too hard to set up to work with webepg and all my channels. The channel downloads and webepg are the best things about mediaportal and i love the fact that i can set up mediaportal in half an hour. With the new mytv it had to scan for channels and the names didnt come out and i had to do everything manually. Scanning isnt anywhere near as good as having the precise frequencies.

Ok. Testing so far:

Hardware - XEON 2.8 Dell Power Edge Server with 512 RAM (needs at least a GB) running w2003 server. 2 x pinnacle plus DVBt cards. 1 x twin pinnacle dvbt card, occsionally 2 x Haupagge sat cards - but some problems. GB lan.

5 clients.
2 x 1.8MHZ p4s (512 RAM - 256 nVidia) 1gb LAN
1 x AMD Althon 2.4 (512 RAM - 256 nVidia)1 GB LAN
1 x Pentium D 3.8 1GB RAM nVidia 512 1GB LAN
1 x AOpen EPC with 512 256 nvidia - wireless PD 3.06

All above are on .2.2 with TV Server plugin

1 'Main' PC 2.8 P4 GB Ram 256 Nvidia (this used to run MCE - but got rid - losing the Guide!!!!!) 2 x Twinhan tv tuner cards (this is the fail safe machine - otherwise there is too much grief!)

Generally it works well - surpisingly so. TV Engine is build from 9th March. Even on the Aopen with the wireless I can watch live tv and recorded tv.

Problems:

1. When watching recordedtv I cannot watch through the recoredtv option have to watch through mapped up video folder - very bad stuttering on recordedtv - on all the machines - through mapped up drive - perfect

2. We are in a bad signal area. If there is no signal then channel changes take ages.

3. adding a new scheduled recording using a search - impossible to use - as soon as you type a letter it searches the whole of the channel database - due to the xmltv imports this is all sat channels.

Otherwise it is pretty stable now - well done guys.

At some point I will get round to downloading the source and have a crack at one or two things, but time is short!

:-)

Using 0.2.2.0 +SVN. Until Power Management is working correctly I won't return to TV3.

Even when TV3 supports Power Management correctly, 0.2.2.0 Is a hard thing to move away from, it took time but now it is very stable.

Having a dedicated PVR means I need stability more than cutting edge features.

TV-Engines comparaison

Good comparison. I've found it very difficult to work out what the new engine is for and why I need to try it out. I thought it was only for the client/server features.

I went through this list though, and the only feature that I look like needing is the ability to record tv direct to mpg.

It looks interesting, but I don't have the time to play around with betas or WIPs. I just need a stable system that runs on my single box under the TV. I look forward to trying it out though when it gets inserted into a new stable version of MP.

Default EPG woes convinced me to drop mediaportal TV

I tried TV Engine 3 and found that I liked it over TV2. That said, I can't get the program epg guide to work on an analog card with basic cable. Should be super easy but I end up spending 2 hours to fix xmltv and a day or two later it mysteriously breaks. I now use mediaportal for all media except tv since a have a valid license for beyondtv (and it automatically converts to divx).

By the way, despite my EPG issue I am definitely a MediaPortal fanboy and have converted many Media Center users.
