Default How do you get H.264 .mov files to play in MP?

I'm using the builtin dvd/video player in MP - no external player. When I try to play a .mov file encoded in H.264, it crashes. I've tried qucitime trailers from the web, plus H.264 .mov files that i have made myself from my HD camcorder.

I can play the movies fine in Quicktime, and Media Player Classic using Quicktime Alternative. But MP will not play them. It loads a black screen, plays a bit of audio, then crashes.

I've tried having only quicktime installed, plus only quicktime alternative. Both with and without COREAVC installed.

Note that regular .mov files work, just not H.264 ones. What am I doing wrong?

A link would be good too - I just grabbed the 1st September version from Free Codecs, and it won't play my HD Quicktime torrented TV shows or HD Apple trailers.

keep in mind if a movie doesnt play in Windows MediaPlayer 10, it will not work in MediaPortal.

A little update. The version of ffdshow I have does support H.264. Also, MediaPortal will play the clips with or without ffdshow enabled. However, Media Player Classic will play it, with ffdshow and without it. So ffdshow is not the issue.

Why is this? Also, what does one need to do to allow Windows Media Player 10 to play H.264 quicktime .mov files?

the problem I am having is that I can play MOV files in WP10 just fine, but MP does nothing. If I select to MOV to play, it just sits there like I did nothing.

Ive had problems with H.264/mp4 not playing in MP. Theyll be working ok, then I'll go to play one a week or so later and it's broken. I think it's caused by installing some other software that changes something FDD uses.

I have got it going again by renstalling FDD sometimes, but usally I end up just reinstalling the boot drive from a ghost image.

This is whats Im using now.
