Default How to play .mkv files

Hi all,

I've got a few random videos that are of type .mkv. How can I get MP to play these files (as it currently wont despite having all the codecs recommended in the codec section)

VLC player does a fine job as an external player but I'd like to keep it all in house. I have dabbled with converting them except the audio always comes out like cr@p.

Also these .mkv files show up in MP, but wont play, and for some reason despite having attached information to them in the Movie Database - no such information appears in MP (also these files are part of a collection where the rest are .avi files and they have no issues in regards to the information or playing)

Any suggestions? Im thinking conversion is the best bet....

Hi,

simple rule: If it plays in Windows Media Player (WMP) it should also play in MP. So you can test with WMP.
VLC and MPlayer are using own internal codecs. So you have to install codecs to get it run in WMP/MP.

MKVs play fine on my machine. It depends on the used codec within the MKV. It could be XviD, DivX, h.264, etc. First of all try installing the Haali Media Splitter: Haali Media Splitter

If it still does not play, you should take a look at ffdshow:
ffdshow tryouts | The Official Website

With this codec I had never problems to playback a video in WMP/MP.

The lack of information for those MKVs is really strange. Did you try to make a IMDB lookup within MP?

HTH,
Flip.

ah ok...I have FFDshow already installed. So is odd that its not playing. As far as I know IMDB recognized the rest of the episodes fine - just not those 3.

I think for future reference I might just make sure everything is an AVI or WMV...

Like the mod said, haali media splitter is basically what you need. Though if you can't get it to work, give it a shot with CoreAVC

Hi,

my mkv files plays fine on WMP, but in MP I only hear the sound but I have no image, just plain black. The oddest thing is if I pause the image the all frame is there and shows itself ok.

Can you help me please? thanks in advance.

When you installed CoreAVC did u choose to install haali media splitter as well?

If not, install haali media splitter, and if it doesn't work, then install ffdshow and use that it as the codec.

As I said on my first post, everything plays fine on Windows Media Player, the problem only happens in MediaPortal.

So, I have haali and everything Codec related apparently installed ok.

I also have ffdshow and PowerDVD Ultra 8 installed, and both works under WMP and MP.
