Question OS choice

Hello all

I currently have a recently dead mythtv box, im going to change it over to media Portal as im a linux idiot and the guy whom set it up is gone, so i get windows, looks all easy enough to set up, one stupid question ive been trying to find for 2 hours now:

If i have to buy new software should i get vista basic or XP MCE, im planning to use 2 digital cards and 1 analouge so im gathering XP home is out right?

if someone could set me straight on this i can go shopping and start some downloading/setup coz ive got 3 boxes i want to link as soon as i can

Cheers in advance

you can try to get a very cheap WindowsXP prof (maybe a systembuilder if you still find one ) which will work without any issues.

you will not have to fear that there are no drivers for your current harware, as you might have with Vista atm.

when you use WindowsXP you only have to make sure that ServicePack2 is installed, along with all other updates which come with WindowsUpdate.

Microsoft has still not included some very old hotfixes for dvb/bda devices into windowsupdate.
You will find them in the requirements section of our ::manual::

If you have problems or questions regarding the installation, just shoot

I would love to find out if vista starter edition would work , since it is half the price of xp home even.

Say I can get ALL the drivers for my hardware for vista, will a copy of vista starter work without problems?

Yes. The drivers situation has gotten much better since launch. As long as you check first for drivers, go ahead. I am running Vista biz x86 for my htpc now, just because I don't like XP at all.

XP Pro everytime. Vista is pointless if your system is primarily a media centre.

I now have installed media portal on a touch screen. Using Tiny XP beast edition.
Its a 400 mhz via processor and 2 Gb CF disk, with a 512 Mb usb CF disk for the page file. But it is very very slow. Is there an option to get a "Media portal Lite" edition ??? Just for using, radio, Recipes and News ?

Would be great,

just disable the plugins you do not need in configuration.

but a 400MHz VIA CPU is realy loooooooooooooooooooooooow end.

especialy because the VIA CPUs have such a low performance if you compare it to Intel or AMD.

Low end is cool!! I have a FULL mame / nes emulator cocktail cabinet running on a 400Mhz p3 with onboard video and even the latest games work.

Jinux , If you wanna speed up mediaportal a bit i would suggest ou use the blackmyst skin , and disable the animations under mediaportal (which you probably allready did)
