im using LOGMEIN.COM.
It works really great (not for viewing movies and no sound) if you want to SEE MP working (which is impossible with RDP) AND change settings or do anything else. it saves me the trouble of going to our basement each time i have to use the PC. I have it hooked on an regular TV so reading fine text is out of the question.

just my 2 cts.

I remember it used to work in the past, but I've now started with a dedicated HTPC and I can't get it to work anymore!

I am using MP 0.2.3 and UltraVNC 1.0.2. Does anybody have any idea what I am doing wrong?
Same, i would switch to tightVNC but the responsiveness of UltraVNC's 'Ultra' 2mbit mode is great because its so snappy. The best thing is it doesnt compress everything like TightVNC does iirc to get a quicker image.

I just installed TightVNC and its way slower than UltraVNC. Everythings much laggier, UltraVNC was like you were using the computer in front of you. TightVNC you can see like lines as it refreshes and updates the image. Any way i can make this better?

Also since the TV is 16:9 and the Desktop PC is 4:3 you get a horizontal scrollbar. In UltraVNC viewer it auto scrolled left/right when you put the cursor at the edge in full screen.

FYI, from testing and reading up on VNC solutions I have found that mirror drivers are not able to capture directx, so pbb and fo0d, that is the issue you are having. directx (which is how the inside of the mp window is drawn) data is communicated directly with hardware and mirror drivers are unable to pick up this information. So the solution is to uninstall the tightvnc/ultravnc mirror driver and use tightvnc/ultravnc without them and you will be able to see mediaportal in action.

Yes, I understand it now also. It is the mirror driver that enabled faster screen capturing and display of transparent windows and tooltips, but at the same time disables DirectX capturing.

TightVNC by default installs without mirror driver, and thus displays MP properly. But in UltraVNC you can uninstall the mirror driver, or select not to have it at install, and then it also works with MP.

Next to the things eXDee already named, UltraVNC also supports server-side scaling (very handy for slow connection speeds and display on mobile devices) and file transfer.
