I've been reading May 1st for start of Freesat.

Though as people are saying, this is definitely not a definitive date.

I can see me getting a new TV at some point this year

Going to build a TV client for the bedroom soon and then probably upgrade the server to a PCI-e and HD capable motherboard and a BlackGold 6-in-1.

By the time I get all that working as I want, I'll need to get a dish installed and wired up. Hopefully after that I can pick up a 50" 1080p Plasma for around £1,000. I'll just need to find something to do with my existing 42" SD plasma...

Interesting, thanks for that.

I was looking at the Panasonic Viera TH50PZ70B which can be had for about £1,150 right now.

As for VM i've not seen anything about this. They still use the same NTL controllers so you sould be able to get it working over analogue using an IR blaster, but I doubt using a DVB-C card is workable (they are also pretty rare).

I have the Viera 37" - It's fantastic!!
The picture quality is 2nd to none, but the sound is a little disappointing but nothing to worry about, I guess its just no oomphy enough for my liking... (I have a Yamaha av amp, so i really dont care about the sound)

I might give this card a go and experiment with the blasting thing then - though not for a month or so ('til the SVNs get a little less buggy)

Hi

I see from 2 websites that the predicted launch date is now the 5th May:

Astra 2D Website - Sky Digital - Sky+ - Freesat - Freeview - UK TV Overseas

Join freesat

although this could still change. I see that there is also speculation that Channel 4 will be available from launch (although E4 and More may not be as these are not Free To View on Freesat From Sky).

Going on past performance, I don't think it is worth betting on.

Some people wil lbet on anything!

I guess it's another wait and see then - only 19 days before that prediction proves untrue.
(Cynical moi? nah!!)

What I'm most interested in is whether we'll need a viewing card to view the channels or whether they will all be completely free to air.

Completely free to air! That's the whole point I beleive, unless they change something just prior to launch.
