This is what I'm using:

- MPA & MPV for SD, Video, DVD
- CoreAVC for HD
- XVID for DivX and Xvid

Since last week I started using CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) because some .mkv files wouldn't play with MP.
No problems since then.

I use the standard Mediaportal installation and the CCCP Codec Pack, too. Nothing else ...

Plays anything and no probs with AC3 thru my Trust 5.1 5€ Soundcard

Can anyone recommend a good codec pack for all standard types AND mkv?
I find CCCP to produce too much distortion with some of my divx-movies.

all you need is ffdshow and Matroska Splitter. they work perfect for me when I play transformers in 1080p

the ffdshow in CCCP is an older version

So far sticking with the Vista Codec pack, as shark does a great job of keeping it upto date.

im using these :

SPDIFFER (for optical audio passthru of everything up to and including DTS /drool - not a cpu hungry codec)
FFDshow tryouts (for xvid/divx/quicktime video)
CoreAVC 1.6 (for x264 videos - my pc cant play any x264s smoothly unless i use THIS codec due to low CPU spec)
Matroskasplitter (to crack open those yummy MKV's)
MPV (for all mpeg2 content)

i will change things around and try cyberlink when i get my new pc tomorrow =)

******************

got my NEW PC huzzah!

i changed the h264 codec ..i can use ffdshow(after enabling h264) which works for EVERYTHING
...or i can use cyberlink powerdvd 7.x video codec for *almost everything* with HW acceleration switched off without any problems(still a few files that appear blocky or interlaced)...if i switch hw acceleration is ON i can play all bluray movies but fewer x264s(only ones that comply with the AVC 4.1 standard encoding process will work with my gf8600 VP2 with HW acceleration on) ..ones that dont comply with the standard are either blocky or give me a black screen(normal behaviour)

all in all..u can use ffdshow or cyberlink with hw acceleration turned off for best compatability with h264

for TV im using the Powerdvd cyberlink 7.3 codecs with hardware acceleration ON, gives me 50fps where normally it would be 25 fps

i am using vista with EVR switched on

I know this because my Yamaha receiver indicates the incoming sample and bit rates. So for example, if I was playing an x264 movie that was DTS 48kHz/1536kbps, it would be sent over SPDIF to my receiver as DD5.1 48kHz/640kbps. Similarly, a DD5.1 48kHz/448kbps audio stream would be sent to my receiver over SPDIF as DD5.1 48kHz/640kbps.

I finally figured out that ffdshow audio decoder was the culprit and since replaced it with SPDIFER and my sound quality is also better now (true to the source).

I love ffdshow for video decoding, and use nothing else, but SPDIFER or AC3Filter is the way to go for SPDIF audio output.
This wasn't due to FFDSHOW it was due to you messing with the settings. Each decoder can be configured to 'SPDIF' instead of 'libavcodec' in the codecs list, and so long as you don't mess with anything in the 'Output' settings, all will be just fine.

Using FFDSHOW audio for everything on my system.
