Question WMP still required ?

Hey,

I don't know where exactly I read this but is Windows Media Player still required for MediaPortal ? The posts I am thinking about indicated that it isn't necessary anymore at all.

Hi

You need microsoft directshow filter for some stuff in MP I believe. Not sure how that works if you remove wmp.

It is stated a requirement in wiki, but it is only needed for some web streams and if you are not using BASS or VMR9.

Yes, this is the post where I read about this. I know about the wiki entry but there are inconsistent informations about this in the forum.
I don't like to modify a productive environment but I might give it a try in this case since excluding WMP will significantly slim down Windows (not disk space but resource allocation). Thanks for the information.

With 2 gigs of memory and a core 2 duo, you really don't have to worry about resources. You will not likely see any improvement in performance by removing WMP.

You are right, but I would at least "feel" relieved You know... perfectionism isn't always efficient

For anyone who is interested: My experiment failed, anyways some videos didn't playback anymore or displayed a black screen. I reinstalled the WMPredist package and everything was fine again. Logs indicated that VMR9 is used but it didn't seem to work correctly. VMR9 or its implementation seems to be buggy anyways since logs indicate I am using exclusive mode even if it is switched off (this has nothing to do with this experiment, just a note).
