8 years later I had the same problem upgrading from 1.29 to 1.30 - and the same solution worked :) Problem was caused by tvservice permissions being messed up so the installer could not stop the service - fixed by a neat little program called ServiceSecurityEditor - I set INTERACTIVE and SERVICE...

I noticed in process monitor that it's writing 22k per second to dvbsubs.log (claiming to be from MediaPortal DVBSub3.ax version 1.0.1). After 40 mins this file reaches 1mb size. I'm not interested in subtitles; is there any way to turn this logging down a bit?
