OK - to save you the trouble - I have installed Maria with both utf-8 and non-utf-8 and with latest Maria and MP 1.33 its failing with the cast to NULL problem.

An Update. MariaDB above version 10 will fail to work with MediaPortal. This is due to: "Object cannot be cast from DBNull to other types"
