This is interesting... So in some cases but not all, MediaPortal is trying to cache the entire thumbs folder. I will do a little poking but this sounds to me like either a configuration issue or a MediaPortal bug.

Hi all, i've had to new a fresh installation of MP (1.1 Beta). I'm using the new moving pictures beta. Everytime I start it, it hangs on 'Caching Graphics' - there is a critical error on my desktop but i'm unable to read it because the hang screen is in the way and when i force close it the critical message goes too. I've disabled moving pictures but it still does it.

The Problem
Okay, so here is the issue. MediaPortal has for some time now cached all PNG image files in the thumbs folder. The purpose of this is to cache TV logos, but because the caching process is not specific a whole bunch of stuff could be cached that isn't supposed to be. This has not been a problem in the past because up until Moving Pictures 1.0 Beta 2 cover art was saved as a JPG. We changed this to a PNG in Beta 2 so we are suddenly affected by this bug.

The reason this seemed to be occuring with some skins and not others is because the issue occurs when building the skin cache. Meaning if you install a new skin or switch to one you have never used before (like Blue3Wide), caching is triggered and you experience the bug. Continuing to use a skin you already had installed and had used in the past will cause no problems because the skin cache has already been created.

The Temporary Solution
You can tell MediaPortal to not cache items in your thumbs folder with a special configuration setting in mediaportal.xml.

1. On the Start Menu under the MediaPortal program group is a link called "User Files". Click this.
2. In the folder that has now opened, look for the file "MediaPortal.xml". Right click this file and open it with your favorite text editor (Notepad for example).
3. Search the file for the following text: <section name="debug">
4. Directly underneath the section text you just searched for, add the following line: <entry name="packLogoGfx">no</entry>
   The debug section should now look something like this:

       <entry name="useS3Hack">no</entry>
     </section>
   

5. Save the file and try launching MediaPortal, it should start up fine now.

Please note that using this work around will also prevent some logos from being cached which may result in some flickering or minor performance issues in the official TV component of MediaPortal. As far as I know only logos for the official MediaPortal TV component will be affected. And these logos will still be displayed properly, they simply will not be preloaded into memory ahead of time.

The Long Term Solution
With the next release of Moving Pictures we will change the file extension used for downloaded artwork so that MediaPortal no longer caches these images. We plan to release Moving Pictures 1.0 RC within a few days.

MP should have a dedicated folder for fanart - it's neither skin specific (usually) nor suitable to be cached.
In addition the code could be changed so just TV station logos are cached by default. The debug setting however still should be left in place - there are people using "logo packs" with hundreds/thousands of large logo pngs even if they don't use/receive these channels...

i just was able to get mediaportal to load up with this fix, but now when i try to open Moving Pictures in mediaportal it tells me that there is an error with the skin and closes.
i am using blue3wide skin.

Based absolutely in the diagnose by Fforde.

1) Disable MovingPictures in MP Configuration.
2) Move the directory movingpictures (inside thumbs) to another location (not in the same tree).
3) Star MP with your selected skin.
4) Put the directory in the original location and enable MovingPictures in MP Configuration.
5) Start Mediaportal.

Works for me.
