Default Reading vob files.

Hi guys, Ive recently started re-encoding my tv series dvds to avi format but just wondered does the tv series plugin read .vob? this would save me a ton of time as ive already ripped all of them jus have to encode them!!

Thanks
Marty

Define "read".

If you mean will it import .vob files, then yes, it'll hapily do so as long as you name them in a way it can recognize (eg "Series 1x01.vob") and you add .vob to the video extensions. It treats it just like any other file.

But if there is more than one episode per vob, you're better of splitting them somehow, wether you choose to reencode to do so is up to you :-)

Default .vob

thanks for the quick reply inker. Basically i ripped all my dvds (movies and TV) onto a hard drive in original file format i.e. video_ts and audio_ts.

This worked great with mediaportal and VMC but i really like the look of the tv series plugin and i have tons of tv stuff so ive decided to move back to mediaportal!! i started to encode all my tv series dvds into xvid which works fine but is time consuming.

Ive been reauthoring my discs with DVD Shrink to get individual episodes so if i rename them to say:

American Dad S01e01
Futurama S01e01

would this save me having to re encode all of the episodes?

(that was long winded) lol

For naming any type of media file, use thetvdb.com to cut'n'paste name to the file, guaranteed to scan ok, same goes for movies, if using imdb.com scan the name from their website, include the year in brackets (or any other source you want the info from).

No, keep the ifo files. I have all of my shows in vob format and a while back and i pointed MP to those .vob files, i had issues doing that. For example if you have multiple vob files (for 1 movie/episode) windows media player wont play the 2nd one when the 1st one is over. So when windows media player is pointed to the .ifo files it will automatically play the 2nd vob file when the first one is over. What you could do is when you rip your dvds have them all go into 1 .vob file, but they dont recommend that (anyone know why?)

Also another issue i'm having with these formats is that when the video is over MP doesnt stop playing the video, the screen just turns black (anyone have a fix for this)

Default vb

thanks for joining the thread. I have been encoding all week and had finished all my american dad and futurama series but when i got to Red Dwarf i got a few problems with encoding thats really why I asked about reading vob files. Even though i fixed the problem i still think it would be easier to re author the rips into individual episodes.

So i decided to do this with all eight series of Red Dwarf and uploaded them to the server. I then used xbmc to test if this worked with tvdb. I had no problems at all. Each vob file was named as follows:

Red Dwarf S01e01

xbmc had no problem finding all the information including episode jpg's.

So my thinking is really that if this works in xbmc it should work in MP tv series!!

right??

So to update and went ahead and setup media portal problem is when i started tvseries plugin it didnt pick up the vobs but did pick up all avi and divx files? So any suggestions here? i removed the ifo's and named the vobs as i mentioned before! do i need to include the ifo's with the same names as the vobs?

Marty

Also other than the above problem this plugin ROCKS THE SOCKS!!!! so easy to edit data once loaded with shows. WOOHOO organisation rocks!! lol
