New Music Database

rtv and me were working on a redesign of the music database over the last days.

The old design was not flexible anymore and it resulted in to many joins to retrieve simple data.

so we've decided to create a flat db style, with no normalisation.
The result is of course a larger file, but this size is still less than an album ripped into mp3.

The new design allows us to implement more things in th future.

For the beginning you have now support for multiple artists, genres and albumartists.
You could simply separate them by a semicolon (";") like WMP does.
for example:
U2;B.B. King

the song / album will then appear for both artists.
same goes for genre and album artists.

There may be still some errors / incompatibilities´, which we will fix over the next days.

needless to say, that a rescan of the shares is necessary.

Great news about the re-design. How about making it flexible so that any fields can be created in the database by the user. So they could add their own tags like band, or composer.

Also can other separators be recognised also? I know some other apps use the | to seperate multi items.

I don't think the increased size is a problem at all.

band (= albumartists) is already included
composer is already delivered by the Tagreader, i just haven't added it to the db yet. simply forgot it

the "|" is used as delimeter as well.

Please be aware, that we're still facing some issues to display those multiple artists in the views.
i hope we can fix that over the weekend.

I dont know if the issue that I'm experiencing is related to your "artist view" problem but I had to roll back to the previous SVN. After rebuilding my database I'm seeing multiple album entries, its as if an album is displayed for every song. Usually when I'm in Album view I only see one album, now with the latest SVN I see multiple entries...

With the new Database design, will it be possible to have Albums
sorted by year for each artist. With the year listed in front of the album name.
(and a YearIndex for multiple releases/year).

Is this already implemented in yesterdays SVN (rev. 16049)? I ask because it adds the album (can see it in album view) but I cant see it in albumartist view... (example of albumartist/band: "Afrob|Samy Deluxe")

Just tried it and the speed improvement is huge!
Loading my playlist now took seconds instead of hanging MP for a minute.
