Default Default video player very bad quality

Hi,

Media portal is great potential project. I have just installed it on a HTPC connected to a full hd plasma 50" plasma. But after playing some xvids, 720p/1080p mkvs and dvds, using the default player, I notice a load of banding in the picture and macro blocking and IMO the picture quality across the board looks terrible. I set up ffdshow to do post processing but it made only subtle improvements. I tested the same files with VLC the picture quality is way way better. Infact so much better even wife noticed

My system is q6600 overclocked, 4gb ram, I have tried multiple GPUs from 3850,3870 to 8800gt and well no difference.

So whats up?

I am no expert, but we would need to know a bit more on your setup, ie what codecs are being used by MP etc. VLC uses a lot of its own internal codecs so that may explain the difference. Use Graphedit to see exactly what is being used by MP to play the videos.

I tried graphedit and it says I am using ffdshow for .avi files. When I click the OSD info in ffdshow I can see fps etc in media portal. But the files have heavy banding etc. Its as if there is some quantizing going on before ffdshow

When I open them in VLC they are perfect.
