That's one ugly looking remote.

You can get the genuine thing for under £20 delivered on ebay.

Sorry

Thanks to all for the input. Finally I bought myself a MCE Remote and it performs amazingly well!

Fully functional, I can do more now with the remote than with the keyboard - or at least easier

Thanks again to all for your help!

I'm using a Logitech Harmony remote for all my other home theater components. I'd like to use it for the HTPC that I'm building also, but I don't have a receiver.
Is there a basic USB IR receiver that I can buy without a remote?

The thing is JoyMonkey, that the MCE remote comes with a receiver and is very competitively priced ... the USB-UIRT doesn't come with a remote but costs more...

A lot of "simple" remote receivers are too simple... If you ever think you might want to send ir commands from the computer then go for the MCE remote.

There are do-it-yourself receivers and cheap universal ones, but not many send as well.

Hope that helps,

Default MCE Remote Help

I just bought an MCE remote to use with MP but all it seems to operate is the Windows Media Center.

I checked the box in MP config to use the MCE remote but this doesn't seem to do anything.

Is there something else I need to make the remote function with MediaPortal ?

I just plugged the receiver in. After a few secs I was prompted to reboot. Upon restart, the control worked perfectly!

I bought the MCE Remote, UK Version

I never touched any other setting.

So you run MP and the remote did not work.

Does your remote look the same as cdemetriadis link to European mce remote.

First time poster...

I'm just starting to plan a simple htpc, but I'm on a bit of a budget. Many of the remotes that I've seen would push the cost of this beyond what I can justify.

If a remote says that it's a MCE remote, does that automatically mean that it's going to work with MP? My needs will be very simple. I don't need every possible function. I'll just want to be able to select a video, play, pause, next, etc.

I found this ultra-cheap remote:
USB PC Remote Control for Windows ME/2000/XP, MCE

This actually looks too crummy even for me, but I figure that if THIS works...

I'm definitely not the one to give you an answer on that particular control, but for what it's worth, I bought the following model

Link to Microsoft Media Centre Vista MCE REMOTE CONTROL Kit UK

...and it worked out-of-the-box

Great quality, nice features, plus it's by Microsoft, so it guarantees it's compatibility with the windows platform.

It might be a few more bucks worth, but it's the safe way.
