Default Slow listing

Hi all

I have some problems with big folders like pictures, music etc.

If i enter a folder it takes 15 seconds to load if the folder on the target computer has big directories.

If enter through Windows it is quick. I am using a wired 100 mbit network

Can somebody help me?

Same problem here, and i'm running a gigabit network.
But even wireless it takes that long...
I gues Mediaportal doesn't use the browsing function that windows provides.

Does anyone has a solution for this problem.

Other Mediacenter don't have this problem
but have sooooo mutch other problems and
all my movies are on a remote server in my network.

I've tried everything,
\\server\video with or without ftp folder enabled...

Thanks,
Nick

Well, had this problem as well, but was also getting some .NET errors when in Media Portal (client) and setting the various folders.

Sometimes when viewing, would take even longer than 15 secs. However after an uninstall and reinstall (RC1) its fast again. Totally bizarre. The only thing I did different in the config was that instead of having the local "My Pictures" listed I only have the Network Share.

One thing I did notice was that when going to My Pictures in MP, it would show only ../ and then nested above that were the two folders listed in Media Portal, now it goes straight to my Network Share. Very odd.

I have the slow loading problem too, mainly for videos using the shares view off a gigabit NAS. It also takes much longer (5-10 secs) to load and view a video off the NAS than what it takes to view the video through explorer. weird.

@all: Please fill inn "My system" (found in User CP - remember to activate) and include logs.
Also do include logs.

If using database (not "shares" view) MP should not be sluggish. (Shares can be, though ...)

Why is shares so slow? Because if i browse in Windows it is fast. Isnt it possible to use the same listing as Windows? Or maybe possible to turn off thumps in a folder. Then it would be alot faster. I dont need thumps in music if it can make it faster

I think i have discovered why it does it. If you have my thumps in the folder it takes long time to load. I have added my dvds to my movies list and have about 130 dvds. It i have thumps for those it takes 40 secs to load. If i dont have thumps it is quick.

So it has something to do with the thumps

Registered and filled in my CP system info just for this thread :-)

The only real issue I have left using MP as an xbmc replacement is the slow directory listing. Hitting "my videos" takes between 15-20 seconds to get the "list". Doing things that require another listing of the same place takes just as long, which is frustrating when you are doing something simple like a movie IMDB info.

Turning off certain views or disabling thumbs doesnt seem to make THAT much of a difference in my case. (a second or two). My media is on a Readynas (1.5T) connected over gig with Jumbo frames enabled on both ends. Windows throughput is fantastic, only in MP is a listing super slow. I hope I can be of more help.

If the physical location of the files is stored in the database (I think this is the case), I'm sure it should be possible to have a folder view that takes its information from the database instead of physically reading the folder.

What I have done to speed things up a little is to put the thumb folder on a RAMdrive. This helps a bit although ideally I would like it to be even faster. I would also like an hourglass cursor or the turning circle, please wait, thingy. As it is now I enter a folder and the whole thing hangs for 10 seconds until the folder is listed. No feedback that MP is actually doing something. This may just be a skin implemantation.

I finally found the post with my same problem! I put all my media on a readynas. I have been browsing using networked file shares. It takes several seconds to get a directory listing if there are 50+ files/dir. I plan to move to the database model.

One concern I have is that I delete my TV shows (and occasionally movies) after I watch them. How do I deal with updating the database?
