Default File Sync Software

Hi everybody,

I'm looking for a software that can sync my files I have
1) On my normal home computer
2) On my Laptop.

Talking about my uni stuff... Maybe I'm downloading some material at home, then do some work at the uni, how do I synchronise the directory with those files best? Preferred would be a program that asks what to do if there is a difference and for text-only files even show the difference.

Best would of course be an open source project or a freeware program.

Thanks in advance
Maschine

I'm using Beyond Compare from Scooter Software ( www.scootersoftware.com ). It's excellent, but not free. You can try it for free, though.

Hi Maschine,

Did you ever try the "offline files" feature from Windows? I've never really used it myself because I don't really have a purpose for it. I always create a VPN connection with my work's network if I want to access files from there.

Anyway, the function is accessible by starting the Windows explorer, choose "Tools" -> Folder options -> Offline files. Here, enable the "offline files" feature. Next, just right-click on a network folder and choose "make available offline". I guess you will want to make your home computer "leading" and use the offline file feature on your laptop.

Kind regards,
Michel

Hmm, thanks for that hint, Michel. I didn't ever think about this one. I'll try it tomorrow and then report back here... But will this also copy new files I created while away back to the home pc if I return home? Hmm, maybe I should just check it ;-)

Thanks for those tips so far, but still open for more ;-)

Microsoft has a really cool new syncing program too called SyncToy!

Check it out at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...o/synctoy.mspx

It works pretty well and it pretty flexible - nice interface too. Yeh, I know, I'm a sucker for MS products sometimes

Thanks, Sam, "your" SyncToy looks really nice and seems to do a good job! Well though there are some good or even better alternatives in some parts, in other parts MS software is still quite good ;-)

Thanks also to all others who replied here!

Microsoft has an utility available ( for free ) called synctoy. This does everything you would ever want it to do..... except making coffee.

The only requirement is a valid version of XP.
