sort ascended.. what does it mean?

ascend= step up
like a,b,c
1,2,3

opposite = descending

This means that rather sorting ascended (a-z or 1-9 etc.) descending would sort z-a, and 9-1?

I can off course se the use for this when sorting by rating, otherwise I can't see the use of this.
