Getting External Display to clear the display before Suspend

Is there a way to make External Display clear the display before suspending or powering down the system?

I have an iMonVFD which is an integrated VFD display and Remote sensor. In order for power on from the remote control to work I have to keep the unit powered up. This keeps the VFD running all the time with what ever message was last displayed. This is annoying and I'm worried about burn in on the screen.
