*.rar files are compressed file archives like *.zip. but with a much better compression rate.

you need winrar to unpack the video which is inside that archive.

Default Hey no

No this is not the case. Offcource I have winrar.
But i won't use it anymore. If you take for ex xbmc it can play direct from rar files.
There are win players also that can do this so a build in function in media portal would be a great plugin.

Small question to the side: Why should you try to compress highly compressed video material (or audio) with a general use packer like rar? Usually this will not result in smaller file sizes (it often increases because of header and other data).

Or is RAR such a terrific program that it can reduce MPG4 streams even further (if so, I will start setting up a new media format ;-) )

Yeah, I don't see the benefit. It doesn't seem like it could compress much more. Why not just extract the video files and make it easier on everyone?

It's not necessarily that you rar it yourself after you rip it to save the space. When you download video (legal un-copyrighted video, of course) it is rar'd into a series of files. It's very convinient to play this with XBMC as you don't have to unrar it, just watch it then delete the rars. Also, sometimes you might get a corrupt rar and no way to repair it. If you try to unrar that, it won't do it. Somehow, XBMC just skips through those few seconds which are damaged. Don't get me wrong, I think MP is great the way it is! But, this is a nice little convenience type of thing.

Here is a workaround:
Watch movies from within RAR-files
