my feedback: observe the development of MS MCE (what you already have done in the past I think). Look at the easy and comfortable navigation, smoothness and easyness. Think about housewifes saying, oh no it is to complicated, i want to press a button and it works...and give more videotex, hdtv (what you alreday do), but stability ist absolute the crucial point to use it like a videorecorder.
Prepare an image/ a tool with setup routines installing everything, tvserver, mediaportal, plugin, and setting all sat/dvb-t channels - all this with recent stable versions comming from internet. And of course with EPG automatically setup... I do not want to ask myself what you mean by "Tvserver client" or "TVserver plugin for MP" and what ever. I do not want install MSQL 2005(!) . To hell i am not an administrator of a global network! I am a housewife having two ugly kids at home! Give us the easy-to-use-video-recorder-feeling! I just want to press one button "standard installation" and 10 min. later I watch my Sat TV. Just give to me! Last edited by mce2005; 2007-08-01 at 11:25. |

the reason for this "comunity project" about MyTV useability is that we can focus and work on stability, while the users workout proposals how they want MyTV to work. as i have said many times allready, we are aware that instalation/setup is complex atm, and we are also working on that one. but creating an "one click" installer is not something you can do with a few mouseclicks, its a quite big project. again, if there are any skilled developers out there reading this, and you want to help, then get in contact with us. ![]()

Just some info first:
Well Im using the TVServer so I get the EPG loaded into the SQL database, this is very usefull for me. I have created a table with some of the same fields as in the EPG. It includes fields so that I can say that I want to record everyting with the name "Ugly Betty", this means that I dont need to care about recording this show anymore. Altso it has the channel id so I can say it's only this channel I want to record and also a day, so if I know that it only tuesday the new episode is running. This gives me the opitunity to not save the replay of the show. Well so far the table does not support episodes number but could easy be impl. I have also created a field for the description because it might have some words I want to record, so if I like The Simpsons and the description says there is a review of this movie it will be recorded as well. I have then created a trigger on the program table witch first delete the show if it alread there(happens everytime the ERP is refreshed) and then added again. So this gives me the perfect recording og series. Ofcause I can supply the SQL script for this, but I have not done any GUI for this. So what do I want: Well I want you make the scheduler smarter with features like this, so I dont need to make sure to remember to record a serie. It also gives me the opitunity to use this on repeating series and will be shown as recording in the EPG and not only the first day with 3 dots(Does not know if this is still working like this). It could also be nice if there could be included some description to the show, so that you could see why its recorded(The Simpsons example) Converting of recordings: Well when you record a lot of shows if could be nice if there could be sort of process you could enable after a show has been recorded, so that you could convert the recording to a different format. It could just be DivX or MP4 for IPods. Menus(Not so specific as the other ideas ):Well if nothing is running left and right button dosnt do anything(in main menu) so it could be sweet with a generic menu in the left of right of the screen, with shortcuts of my choice. Also a popup menu in the buttom like the start menu in Win XP, could be enabled then you hit the close button(remote control only) and give you some choice of what you want to do like restart MP. /Madley |

maybe this is not the right place to put it, but I have a suggestion that should be thought about... for not only TV-Server, but mayb the whole of MP.
Remove the unneccesary. For example, if a plugin cannot work because it depends on a device like the internet maybe (or a webcam etc.) then remove it temporarily so that the menus become less cluttered. (for this, plugins need an adjustment to its template class... it needs to require a list of needed items like a list or perhaps a way to make use of internet or a particular device only accessible through custom MP classes that cause MP to know its limitations... this eliminates the need to go out of MP to remove a plugin because it wont be needed for a while and is taking up space, distressing the users (long list = bald man ;P) Consider having a learning system similar to windows start menu. Have regularly used commands first, unused last. with respect to the tv-server, I cannot be specific because I do not own a TV card and dont know what is or isnt there... I will get one soon though. |

Hi Chris,
You already know where i stand, but it should be repeated here: Right know the TV-Server concepts combines two conceps: 1. The ability to view tv-content over the network, i.e. TV client-server. 2. The central management of (any) content through a server. I would suggest that the TV client-server thing becomes a seperate module and would be developed as a virtual dvb card following the alt-dvb concept. This way, there are no changes in the user-interface nescessary, which would simplify the tv client plugin a lot. When setting up such a device in the client application, instead of pointing to a real card, you point to another machine and port. You can 'scan' such a device just like a normal dvb card and it will find the channels you already setup on the server side. The way the streaming works would most probably differ from the current TV-Server. It would be nice to have a degree of freedom in container formats being used in streaming. The rest of the current TV Server can be a seperate development and can off course also make use of virtual dvb cards, but it is a development i am not very interested in at the moment. The idea behind this is the notion that it should not be a big deal where a dvb card is physically located. It should not matter. This idea has been elegantly exercised in Alt-dvb 2.0 and i suggest anyone to take a look. Alt-dvb itself is supposedly dead, but can still be downloaded. Do not use 2.1, the client-server does not work in that version. A practical reason for this approach would be that most (?) people would opt for 'ordinary' Mediaportal with the use of one or more virtual dvb cards. Last edited by pastimer; 2007-08-14 at 10:08. |

Just a suggestion, I think we should really take in mind this project:
http://forum.team-mediaportal.com/ru...8.html?t=26158 when designing new myTV section. I really think this is the future TV recording code that could be used in some next version of MP... I don't have much time at the moment but I promised the dev of this code to make a layout for his code... |

Hi Guys
Here is another suggestion for your new challenge. A feature I'll like to see in the Server Plug-in (or through an additional dedicated plug-in) would be the capability to use as client, a media center device such as the Showcenter 200 or equivalent. I think it could be intresting to view and zap in realtime (like Nero Mediahome) TV channels tuned by the PC DVB card directly though those devices (i.e. through unpn server). I don't know how big can be the effort to realize this feature but I think that it would be very appreciated. Regards Olaf P.S. Compliments for all the good jobs you are doing for us |
