Sticky needed: Skins and copyright +++

This has been an issue in some occasions:
- Meedio (I believe) using 3DMP
- 3DMP (again) "withdrawn" from MP (don't go there!)
- Using of Grassynoels MePo (!!!) and mofuxs skin for Meedio or other HTPC-app.

It would be great to have a sticky to set things clear when it comes to UL-ed skins;
- Can they be modified and UL again (to MP)?
- Can one use icons (modified or not) in another skin (or other gfx)?
- Can other HTPC-software "port" the skins to be used with their app.?


+++ ...probably a lot more!


I understand that people can "do as they want" with Blue2 (as long as it is for MP?). Right?



EDIT: Read signature... would be nice to wake some of these dead skins from the dead.

From IRC I got told that the XMLs where open for everybody, but not the graphics.

Could ppl who have UL-ed skins say if they will let other use (and modify) their grapics

For SimpleMP skin, the copyright conditions is stated on the download page and on the skin thread:

"My gfx:s can be used, modified or copied free within the MP project, that's what they're made for. Most icons are originally created by Pit-tux: omallstars_13@hotmail.fr, http://pit-tux.deviantart.com/ and are modified and published for this skin with permission."

All skins should have a readme.txt stating the copyright conditions for the graphics.

As long as you credit the original artist and no limitations regarding copyrights are provided along with the the skin, couldn't you fairly use the graphics? Much like when writing you can quote others text as long as you credit them. Would it not also depend on the country the graphics were originally created in as far as what legal copyrights even exist?

Good to know, in my current making of a easy_to_read skin I am making for my father, I use some of Foofaraw's gfx.
If I upload it later, I will offcourse send a PM and give the info about what I used, and ask for the permission.

Other gfx I have been using are the meepo animations. Basichome with 4 animated meepos, rendered at 400x400 px are eyecandy for my father.
I dont think I will ask for permission to use the meepos in a release, since they are rather unique. On release I will use other icons I guess. (Unless I get the permission) :p
