Country: | Beware! I used to have a custom boot screen - Very slick... ...until one day Windows Update installed something that caused the system to BSOD during boot due to incompatibility with the files I had messed with. AFAIR there's plenty of warnings against custom boot skins on the stardock site.

| Portal Member | lol, rule of thumb, never trust Microsoft to not break a perfectly good system! This is why I use the download and notify option, or turn autoupdate off completely, the chances of you needing fixes against malicious code in a HTPC setup is nil if you already have everything working fine, and use a decent firewall. Also, Tuneup Utilities has some very nice bootscreens along with nice logon ones, that seem to work just fine as well, ran those for a year til I upgraded, and WinUpdate never affected them. Stardock can barely debug their own stuff as well....it's their solutions/workarounds that cause the usual instability seen when using their products, not windows. Other products(even open source ones) work just dandy and exhibit no funky behavior like Stardock products do over time. I like TU Utils because it does so much more than this....and all in a small unbloated app. Funny how a few years of good coding can make ten+ years of barely adequate coding look so bad. It's also worth noting that you shouldn't use themes from first time authors on a machine you aren't prepared to recover, as most of these either change, or replace the boot shell. The MediaPortal pak has a few nice ones, but some newer boards can render so much more to vga during boot now, and I've seen high quality boot screens from in-home installers that blow these away. The MP pak could use a refresh for the times methinks. I'd be happy to come up with some mockups if someone can get me specs and color limitations for newer boards, this way I could make two of each, one low bit, one high bit, and make all boards/users happy.
