Exclamation Can't play videos anymore? :S

Okay, this problem as far as i'm aware has only recently started(tho i'm not sure cuz i used to still play videos in Media Player). but in MP i select a video file, any file, and the screen goes black, the sound starts(tho kinda crackily) and if i'm lucky i may see a jerky video playing. I press ESC but nothing happens, i press F9 for the OSD but nothing, the mouse moves but doesn't do anything when clicked, i press ALT + F4 to quit but nothing, then after a while MP shuts down(if i haven't restarted the computer already). I've tried all sorts of codecs and aspect ratios but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

i've tried to disable all the plugins, leaving only Home and My Videos enabled, i went to select the video and pressed it, the menu still shows and the video kinda plays(the screen is still on video selection but i can hear sound) the sound has pauses and crackles and sometimes when i play videos the screen goes black. Once the video stops i can navigate MP again.

Those will not work together. 350-400w Truepower with decent amperage on the main rails rqd.

Will the video's play fine in WMP.

Try turning off hardware acceleration.

Have you any codec packs installed.

What format are your Video's.

Do you use FFDShow.

Try to answer above, may give yourself and us a idea of what may be going on.

Its worked fine before, games play fine and they are more demanding.

yes

Try turning off hardware acceleration.

I'll try that now. i'll post again with results

Have you any codec packs installed.

no, but i'm about to install some.

What format are your Video's.

WMV/AVI i think. MPEG videos play with no problems, have full control over MP, doesn't lock and sound is good.

Do you use FFDShow.

thats a codec isn't it? i don't think so, but one of the codec packs i downloaded has it so i'll give it a go.

I'm not a fan of codec packs as you don't know what your getting. Try uninstalling all your codecs, and following this: http://www.projecthtpc.co.uk/htpc_software.html. That's how I got mine to work, and it's playing videos perfect now. Let us know how you get on.

I've uninstalled the codec packs

I've noticed Media Player isn't playing videos very well, the videos that aren't playing are WMV format, although the videos play better than in MP but are very jerky. I think i'll uninstall Media Player and reinstall again.

I've installed the latest DirectX
I've installed the latest nVidia drivers
I've reinstalled Windows Media Player 10
I've reinstalled DiVx
I've checked the graphics card temperature[45oC]

And, some WMV do indeed play now, tho it takes a while for them to start playing but they do play with no problems with sound and smooth playback. however some WMV do not play including all my HD movies, but even some low resolution videos don't.

When I try and play certain video files Media Player crashes, some game intro movies play very slowly too. I'm confused over whats causing this as some files of the same type play. It is odd. I'll keep trying to figure it out.

I tried installing codecs but no luck, this isn't just a problem in Media Portal, game intro movies don't always play properly and Windows Media Player crashes when trying to play videos in the Windows Media Video/Audio format. I can't work out why. I've reinstalled Media Player, downloaded codecs including those suggested, i've changed codecs in MP, i've reinstalled DirectX, i've installed the latest nVidia drivers, i might risk reinstalling Windows.
