Suggestion: Support artist folder.jpg (1 Viewer)

Nearly everyone has their music files organised as

\artist\album\filename.mp3

Most people have \artist\album\folder.jpg = Album picture

Would be great to implement an artist picture

\artist\folder.jpg = Artist picture scraped from last.fm

maybe someone with programing skills could create a standalone app

scan music root folder for 1x level subdirs
if exist mediaportal\thumbs\artist\%subdirname%L.jpg then copy that file -> \music root\subdir\folder.jpg

Someone has creating a stand alone application that will do this.

It will scan the root music folder
Get the name of each subfolder which the program will assume is the artist name
It will then check the mediaportal artist thumbs directory to look for a picture of that artist
If the picture exists then it will copy the artists picture into the subfolder and rename it to folder.jpg
It has an option to overwrite exist folder.jpg if needed otherwise it wont overwrite existing folder.jpg

it works fine for me, as long as subfolder name matches artist name in mediaportal database

Will mediaportal scan the folder and use the images saved if you need to rescan your database from scratch after a new install?

Same as movingpictures does with the movie covers.

I have created all the artist images manually as the i don't like the ones last fm throws up as they are generally appalling quality and of inconsistent dimensions so if MP uses the saved images as priority this would be a great app. would also be great if it could do the same with fan art.

Only really see it as useful if MP can actually use them when it scans though.

nope it wont, you need to backup the thumbs/music/aritsts directory in the mediaportal data directory. after you reinstall mediaportal and scan your music you can copy the files back here to restore your original custom images.

mediaportal can scan folder.jpg for albums, but can not use any folder.jpg images for artist thumbnails as not everyone has the same directory structure.

The usefulness occurs if
1. you browse your music in mediaportal using shares mode
2. you browse your music folders in file explorer it will look pretty
3. you browse your music folders using a media extender eg. Western Digital Media Player then you will get artist images when you browse music.

Ah ok, not much use to me then, expected as much, just got hopeful for a while.

I have my music arranged as described in your music guide

Everytime i add a new artist i add the artist image to the folder and the image to a back up folder so i got that if i need it.

Having it scan the artist folder for the images similar to how movingpictures does would be a nice addition though, for me at least.

in the future we may see either artist image stored and scraped from within the mp3'd id3tag or maybe mediaportal can use an artist.jpg if it occurs in the same folder as an mp3. The first one is possible the 2nd one has potential problems.
