This may be a dumb question, but does this require the use of a blaster?

I *think* I've taught my MCE remote to turn off the display (Olevia 337H). It does the double blink confirmation thing and all that. But pushing the button doesn't seem to have any effect.

Nope, the remote itself sends those learned commands if trained. No blaster needed.

It could always be, that your remote uses code combinations that can't be learned by the MCE remote. Best try to train it with another device (e.g. amplifier) to test if there's a general problem with your remote or if it's just a problem that it cannot read those "special" codes.

Thanks much. That's what I though, but wanted to be sure. I'll go back to making sure that it's learning properly.

I know this is an old thread but I am unable to get my mce remote(gateway branded) into learning mode. I hit OK and DVD MENU and nothing happens, no lights flash, blink or anything.. Any one have suggestions?

Most third party MCE remotes (Hauppauge, etc... packages that do not include a microsoft orininal remote) can not be programmed... A genuine Microsoft remote can.. as can the MCE Keyboard.
