Question Straight question about blu-ray

Okay, a search for this doesn't reveal a clear-cut answer, and reading through 121 replies (and counting) to a post that may answer it is confusing, especially if you haven't yet tried to play blu-ray and so don't know what the problems being discussed are really referring to.

So, currently I have DVDs backed up onto the harddisk using Ripit4me, and can watch them just by navigating to them in the mediaportal menu. Is it possible yet to do this with blu-ray?

* Can blu-ray movies be backed up to the hard drive in a version that can be played back with mediaportal?

* What software is needed to playback the blu-ray movies, either on the harddisk or in the blu-ray drive, from mediaportal?

I'm sure a lot of people would like a simple answer to these questions. Thanks.

That plugin looks promising, but I don't yet have a bluray drive to try it with. I don't want to invest in a bluray drive now - given that they are still relatively expensive - if I cannot then get the software for it to work properly.

Also, the plugin doesn't mention whether it is possible to play back bluray movies from the hard drive.

Well, I just got my Blu-Ray drive the other day. Pioneer BD ROM, DVD-R, etc etc etc. I haven't installed it yet (no dedicated time)... but, the point is, I bought it for like $150 from Meritline. SATA, 5x BD. So, the prices are coming down.

As for playing the BD ISO or whatnot from HDD, if you do a 1:1 ISO, you are taking up major space. If you can't afford the BDROM, you won't be able to afford the HDDs you'll be needing to buy.

The cheapest I have seen a bluray burner for is $350. This is not a lot of money, which is why I would be happy to buy one. However, there is no point if I buy it and find out it does not work - in terms of what I want it for.

I don't understand how cost of HDDs came up when I was asking whether a bluray drive would work or not. FYI, my htpc currently has 1.5TB, but I am planning on upgrading it at some point to 2TB. Are you telling me that this will not be enough space to create ISOs of bluray disks?

I mentioned HDDs because you said you want to play Blu Ray movies from HDD:

"Also, the plugin doesn't mention whether it is possible to play back bluray movies from the hard drive"

So, my assumption was that you were to want to play ripped movies from the HDD.

BluRay ISOs are going to be between 25GB and 50GB, so it won't take long to fill even 2TB

Well, betweem 25-50 gb of space per movie is not quite true. Most discs are 20-25 GB I would say.

I also wanto to know how to playback bluray backups from HDD.

If u look at 25 gb per movie the HDD space costs ~4 euro per movie, not that bad at all. Much less than blank bluray media wich is atleast ~8 euro.

Is there any way of adding blu ray isos to my movies and play them with an external player like power dvd 8 straight awya in media portal?

The plugin you're talking about requires mounting of the bluray image first on a "virtual" bluray drive or playback from optical drive and disc.

and the plugin is yet to be fixed for power dvd 8.

Anyone know how to modify the HD_starter.exe to open cyberlink/powerdvd8/powerdvd8.exe instead of powerdvd.exe that its set for now? Can u edit the script somehow?

I am playing the blu-ray from hdd. All movies are in ISO format.

I am trying to get more info on the movies to build the database from imdb. It seems to be working. But there is thumb created for the movie.

I am using mediaportal 1.0.0 RC1

Please advise.

Thanks

Are you using any plugins for this? I use the My Movies plugin to manage my database and would love to be able to add bluray movies to it.
