You might want to try installing an app like Apps2Fire (from Google Play) on your android phone. Once it is installed, it becomes trivial to sideload apps by first installing the app on your android cell phone and from that transferring a copy in one quick shot to firestick of fire tv.

I can't offer any solution but can confirm it still works with my Samsung s4 on KitKat 4.4.2 which is 1080 too. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app? Wouldn't of thought it was a resolution problem but wouldn't know what else could cause the problem

MX player works fine for me on Samsung galaxy s4. For best results I make sure HW+ is enabled within settings of mxplayer.

Sounds like a bug, I can't really help you though since I'm not planning to do any bugfix release for the current 1.1 branch... I will have a look at it and will double-check for the next version (which will have a rework of the download code anyways).
