In this case the problem is not that they get unregistered - they simply refuse to connect to anything unless the WinDVR software has been registered. Codecs are quite capable of checking the registry (or any other place where a software register key might be stored) so PDVD would be an exception if that does indeed work.

I would say there is no right or wrong codec. Use which ever works best for you. I never used to like the Microsoft DMO decoder for VC-1 as it stuttered more than Arcsoft but since SP1 and updating my ATI drivers it seems to be fine so I'm going to switch back to it.

I experimented with running 1080p movies with lots of movement (Planet Earth), and found out that Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder...
Well, I tried it but it doesn't work. Appereantly, the MPV decoder won't connect to the FFDShow raw filter... the ffdshow raw filter does connect to other decoders, like the M$ MPEG2 decoder or powerdvd's decoder. Strange, since the MPV decoder outputs regular raw video (YV12..?) content.
Is this a known issue or a 'feature' ?
