There is a slight problem in my household since we first stumbled across MediaPortal. Using the TV as a TV is no longer the norm...

Thats not exactly the same. The option inside mp config is for starting the last used module (like tv, or music etc...) and mpstartit will every time start tv or music, independently of what you used before closing mp.
