12V+ from PC PSU for ext USB TV card (1 Viewer)

Hi,

rebuilding my infrastructure and moving to a client server environment. The existing server (based on windows home server) only has on PCI slot, so I purchased a Technotrend DVB-S2 3600 USB TV card.
It came with an external 12V DC power supply.
At the moment the power supply (and obviously the attached TV card) is always on, while I hibernate the server with the lightout WHS plugin (works fine for me).
I want to power up/down the TV card along with the server and as the card is powered with 12VDC, I thought the easiest option was to connect it to the 12VDC coming from the server power supply.

Is this actually possible or is the 12VDC from the switching power supply not usable for this?

Hi!

That should be ok.
To be 100% you should measure your supply voltage, and dont forget to connect ground from your PC (check that its the same ground). Ground is probably in USB-connection, but check it!

did not yet try, but will do so during the week. The reason for me asking was actuqally whether the 12V switched power is suitable to replace an external 12V PS.

yes it is, its voltage regulated (same voltage within +/-5% at different loads).
