2 folders, one list? (1 Viewer)

I have a large collection of movies and music on my computer. They're spread out over three hard-drives and different directories.

Is there a way to display the contents of all these directories on one screen instead of having to back up the the list of pre-defined dirs, and remember which movie is where?

It would be nice to be able to define a video share as "c:\video | h:\video | i:\video" or whatever.

any way to get that done?

I could be wrong, but as I understood it, thats what the movie database is for. If you go into configuration and and movie database there is a scan tab which you can choose where to scan. Then inside MyVideos in MP, choose Change View -> Titles.

Scanning takes a long time but you get nice thumbnails + ratings + whatnot.

two things about that.

1) scanning the database always seems to crash on me.

2) Does the database agragate all the movies from all your shares? As is it, when I define shares, I can pick one to enter by default, then I have to nav-up to see my other shares. If I can somehow complete the scan, will it create a new share that I can default to? or will i just see all the files in the database?

I have this exact issue..

I have several disks (5) on which I have movies.

I have foreign films that don't appear in imdb, so there is no way to get them into the database without actually hand-editing (not very feasible).

The ability to see all the movies in one place would be really helpful. Any way to do this?

what about making a playlist?
I have tried a bit myself without sucsess but it should work.

Pherhaps you could also make shortcuts of the movies and add .lnk to extension MP can recognise? Dont know if that would work.

Well Both of these methods will work to some extent. My true purpose in all of this was to set the designated folders and never have to worry about it again, ie, not have to ever manually re-index the files.

There are plenty of library applications to which you can add links and tell to scan for new files. What I was looking for was a way to view all my files without having to do all that.

I name my files well so I don't have to worry about indexing and tagging, the directory structure does that for me. I just want to see the contents of both dirs on one screen without having to update everytime I add some content. (which is often, usually a movie or 2 per day now that I'm ripping my DVD collection.)

I've the same issue
I've 2 computers in LAN with 2 folders that contain films or music
I want choose one of them without launch the setup and choose the other folder

The solution to all these problems is "junction points"

This is a little known functionality built into WIndows XP and NT.

It allows you to link a folder with another folder, or even and entire disk. Windows does it automatically with "My Music" and "My Documents".

Do a google search for "junction points" and "folders" for more info.

Could you try and see if you can get this to actually work and post for us?

The reason I ask is, I think I've tried it and can't seem to get it to work.

This is one problem for which I'd really like to find a solution. I don't mind running scripts etc. either. I already do some of that through the myprograms plugin and some perl scripts I wrote.

Hi there. I have no need to create any new junction points but I have done it many times before and I know it works.

Here is an example.

Imagine you store your videos in a folder called "videos" on drive C.
Inside the "videos" folder are sub-folders, like "action", "drama" etc
Drive C is almost full, so you need to create extra space.
Imagine you have a second hard disc with plenty of space, drive D.

You can create a folder on drive D and call it "extraspace"
Then create a sub-folder of "videos" on drive C and call it "romance"

You just create a junction link from the "romance" folder to the "extraspace" folder.

When windows looks at the "romance" folder it will think and behave as though it is on the C drive, even though it is actually on the D drive. You can treat it the same as any other folder, except whatever changes you make in the "romance" folder will actually happen in the "extraspace" folder.

Also if you go to the "extraspace" folder and delete/add files etc the changes will appear in the "romance" folder.

There is a freeware program to create the junction link, because it can be difficult to do manually....look here.

You can make as many sub-folders in the "videos" folder and link them to as many drives as you like.
