I have MP installed on one PC, it has a thousand movies but no TV at all.

I want to setup my laptop so I can play the movies remotely using MP, is this possible?
I guess I would have to connect to the remote database? any pointers?

I am using MovingPictures to watch the movies, if that is ever relevant.

I tried downloading the component and starting the Deploy tool manually
but no such option was offered.

Thanks !

AW: 2 PC setup question (client/server for movies)

Sure. That's one of the main features of MP.

Just install MP on your PC as "Singleseat" and on your laptop as "Mediaportal Client". Set the correct directories in MP Configuration on your laptop and start watching.
I would recommend to activate the powerscheduler plugin so the server won't shutdown while watching a movie.

Have fun :)

Thanks Iwen for the quick reply!

Does this mean it will get all of the database configuration from the other PC? Movies titles, cover arts, etc.

I just did install it as a client, like you mentioned, how do I tell him where (IP, etc) it should
connect to get its info?

Cheers

No it will scan all the movies and add a local copy of all the cover and pictures, and have its own local database.

You just add the folder the movies are in through the network location.

Ok, I see, so what is the Client setup made for?

And isn`t there a way to trick the local copy so it access the remote DB? would that work?

The reason I am asking is that I spent hours tweaking the titles, categories, cover arts, etc.
and I don`t want to do it another time.

    Thanks!

AW: 2 PC setup question (client/server for movies)

Multiseat (server + client) is mainly for sharing a tv-card. So if you have a server with one tuner, all clients can watch tv (of course not the same time).
But also for movies it's a good idea to save huge movie collections on the "big server" and only stream it to a client with little hdd space.

If you use MovingPictures it shouldn't be so much work to import titles and covers again, but you can also try this solution.
    UserGuides/CentralisedDatabases - MediaPortal Manual Documentation
Be aware: it's not officially supported, but should work.

Any luck trying trying the central DB?

I thought that was the whole point of the client server config in MP? So the only benefit is I can set a recording on any PC and it will be recorded by the TV server? I am a brand new user (just installed MP) coming from XBMC. So, if I watch a show in MP from client 1 will it not show as watched on client 2?

I will take a look at the article and set it up. Thanks for the heads up. I guess I would have found this out once I install my first client.

I use the set-up linked above and it has worked well for me, but I understand these few things:

It takes MP a lot longer to load up

If you are connected via a weak WiFi signal then once MP is up and running, let it sit for 5 mins more. this is because moving pictures and MyTVSeries takes time to load even beyond MP

Turn of all all auto database updaters/importers on all PCs and do it manually. If u add something and have everything set to auto then u will end up with multiple duplicates.

Be patient... things can and will get tricky =)
