Whats the resolution and real aspect ratio of the plasma? (for example 1024x768 with a 16:9 display)
If the resolution aspect ratio doesn't match the real aspect ratio (as in the above example) you should calibrate the display in MP (i forget where exactly the option is), in order to tell MP that pixels are not square.
If you have already done this, of course make sure you are in Normal zoom mode. Try changing the MPEG-2 codec used and see if that helps.
I cant really help any more than that because you dont provide sufficient details (MP version, codecs used, log files etc).

I had to set it to "Maintain display scaling". I think it was set to "Maintain Aspect Ratio", which added black bars to MediaPortal when playing videos that didn't conform to a strict 16:9 ratio, I suppose.

thank you Sir, issue is definitely resolved now, i uninstalled the problematic MSE altogether, plus i also now have optimized EPG grabbing configuration, thanks again for all the assistance, wow so much faster on everything now that MSE is out of the picture...MP WAF is now restored and FetchTV STB sits in the corner collecting dust :)
