As dumb as this is, I'm testing MediaPortal for the first time in quite a few years and I noticed that there's a weather section in the menu system. However, when I go to it, everything is question marks. I've checked in the "settings" section but cannot find a way to change the weather to be local weather.

Is the MKV container supported?

Is there a plugin or ability to skip commercials for recorded shows?

I have 800 movies stored on a NASbox and each movie has a folder.jpg as well as most have some form of xml data on the movie (Windows Media Center setup), is there any way to have a similar setup, or even more automated method of categorizing these movies for MediaPortal?

Would you say Media Portal is less of a resource hog than Windows Media Center? (I have 800 movies getting scanned over the network everytime I enter my movie section of WMC and it's a bit laggy.

I guess I'm looking into other viable options that might perform better than WMC for my media use. MediaPortal and XMBC are the two main options that I think are out there that have a large amount of support so that's why I'm looking here, as I don't believe XMBC has tuner support (I might be incorrect about this as I haven't looked all that deeply yet into XMBC)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. If a lot of this has been answered in some FAQ section of the forum, please refer me to there as I don't mean to clutter the forums with repeat questions.

    AW: A couple questions...

First of all: Welcome to MediaPortal :D
    Here are the answers:
For weather data you have to setup your location in MPConfig > Weather.
MKVs are supported (if you have the correct codecs installed. Hint: Search for SAF in the forum)
For your movies you should install the plugin Moving Pictures.
MP scans only one time to setup it´s database where new fies are added automatically with nearly zero impact on performance.
And yes, MP is much more responsive as WMC :D

If you've managed to play mkv in WMC, then it'll definately work in Media Portal. Unlike WMC you don't have to hack the registry for mkvs to work...

Actually with Win 7 MCE, there was no need for a registry hack. Install Haali Media Splitter and that's it, now it may have done the registry hack in it's install, but I doubt that. (however I've been known to be wrong from time to time. haha)

Alright, so the overall response time is much better with MP. I like that.

The only question that wasn't answered was the commercial skipping or removing capabilities.

And thank you both for the info thus far. Extremely helpful.

Sorry, forgot that - yes, in TVServer you may setup the inbuilt plugin ComSkip which skips commercials.
