Is MediaPortal compatible with this tv tuner card and this remote?
Also, can MediaPortal record in mpeg-4 or, if it can't, is there a plugin that will allow it to?

Looks like a software encoding card, nothing saying otherwise on manufacturers website.

If it is you will need to have a 2.8Ghz processor to use its functionality with MediaPortal and also a directx9 capable Graphics card.

But you may need to add the card to the supported card list found here

    https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/showthread.php?p=36471#74504

No MP cannot record in mpeg4.

2.8 Ghz??? All I have is a dual core 64-bit 1.6 Ghz!!! Would I be able to use a previous version of MediaPortal or something?

Well you could but the software card setup was a little dodgey back then so theres no guarantee it would work with that either. Plus it will have less features and not as stable. You MUCH better off buying a hardware encoder card.

Oh. Well this one was only $37, which is mad cheap for a tv tuner that isn't pci. (I already paid for it and it's coming in the mail soon). How unstable is RC2? Is it usually usable on fast computers that dont have a lot on the hard drive? What features is it lacking? Also, is there a plugin that allows MPEG-4 encoding? And is there a plugin that allows files to be stored on an email account instead of the hard drive?

I could be wrong but I thought the old software card support was removed earlier than that. The whole reason it was removed was because the software card support was terrible. Too many complaints hence why we are where we are now.

Still no, it was a rather high cpu usage user but would be better than what is required now.

    What features is it lacking?

Dont particularly remember back that far but the first was the inability to watch/record at the sametime. You cant watch what your are recording and high cpu spikes will cause a lot of jumping.

Also, is there a plugin that allows MPEG-4 encoding?

The codec choice was up to you back then but I dont know if realtime mpeg4 will run acceptably.

And is there a plugin that allows files to be stored on an email account instead of the hard drive?

    No

Your CPU should be fine. A dual core AMD will be faster than most 2.8Ghz older chips anyway, remember that with AMD the clock speed is not really the ultimate speed indicator.

Just wait until the card comes, then install it and see if MP picks it up. If not, then fill out the steps in the previous link and be patient.

Also, use the latest version of MP, possibly with a very recent SVN. The new code enhancements make MP use a lot less CPU cycles.

    For the e-mail thingy:
If you are talking about storing files on G-mail, then yes you can. There's some third party software that makes gmail act like a hard drive, you could then tell media center to save recordings there (I think). Actually now that I think about it I believe that the windows version cannot handle files greater than 10 megs, but the linux version can handle arbitrary file sizes. In that case you'd need to setup a linux box and share the drive using samba. seems like a lot of hassle. Also regrading mpeg4 recording: I don't understand why its not an option, for people with fast computers its just less hassle. However if you look in the tips and tricks forum there's a way to have it automatically transcode recorded shows.

MP still uses the built in windows stream buffer engine. This does not support anything but MPEG2 so until the new TV engine comes, it wont be an option.

O Frabjous Joy! That seems to have done the trick. Thank you so much for your help and advice, CyberSimian. I hadn't thought of deleting the various folders, but I'll bear that in mind for any future disasters. Now I can record King & Conqueror on Sunday! Cheers Ralph

In addition to what other people have said, MPC VR also has support for: hardware deinterlacing with D3D11 decoding, which madVR never implemented DXVA Super Resolution, the way which e.g. NVIDIA and Intel GPUs can provide AI upscaling HLG HDR (used by some broadcasters), which madVR doesn't (Edit) It can also turn Windows HDR on and...
