I just noticed the thread saying how we can contribute by submitting patches and it mentions to start by looking at the bug tracker. Do so I was trying to click on one of the links provided in a ticket for more details only to find that access to the sub forum was restricted.

What is the process to gain access to the testers sub forum?

Only team members have access to Testers Lounge, and that will not change. We try to make all relevant info available in mantis, but the internal team discussion before the mantis entry is created can be found in the linked thread. It is a means to direct the developer to the thread and post that the bug has been fixed. For community patches, this will be handled by the developer reviewing submitted patches, so this procedure should ideally not cause any problems.
