I'm starting to get into recording TV with MediaPortal/TV-Server 1.0.2. Recording an hour-long ATSC digital program takes 7-9 GBs! I understand that it's a lot more information, higher quality formats being used than for an analog/NTSC recording, but I'd really like to get the filesize down some. In MediaPortal > TV > Scheduled > [Program] > Settings, there's an option called "Quality Setting". Can this be used to adjust the recordings' filesize? It's grayed out and unselectable; how can it be activated?

MediaPortal > Plugins > Settings> TV... lists video/audio codecs. Are these codecs installed within MediaPortal, or detected already on my system, or what? Are they used to record, playback videos, watch TV? Would changing these affect ability to playback video within MediaPortal, because recently I can't playback recordings (any video) in MediaPortal--Live TV is fine, and programs still record and are playable in other software, but MP reports, "Unable to play: [video.ts] Audio codec: " Despite selecting every audio codec listed in Settings, some of which I recognize as definitely being on my system before MP, so should be available, videos fail to play and this spot in the message remains blank.

Another puzzling thing is the Recording Format selection under TV-Server config > Recording Settings > Recording Folders. I have Transport Stream (.ts) listed, and can't change that setting to anything else, although the matching screenshot in the wiki (TV-Server/Configuration/Recording - MediaPortal Manual Documentation) indicates an ability to change the format through a drop-down box. Is this capability unavailable for MP 1.0.2 (that wiki page was last updated August 2008)?

Sorry about the overload of questions. Hitherto, I've used Windows Media Center to record analog TV, then various third-party transcoding programs to shrink the filesize. But then my region switched to digital/ATSC TV, and I had to get a new TV tuner card. I switched to MP because the possibility of choosing different codecs to record with, and creating smaller digital recordings, was appealing. But the extra configuration is a little confusing.

I feel like I'm missing something here, so any help would be appreciated.

and Quality Setting?

Thanks, catavolt. Is this also why Quality Setting is grayed out--a feature removed from the latest stable version? I haven't found any mention of this setting in the release notes or wiki, but its presence under recording settings is intriguing.
