I'm in the process of building my HTPC and I am starting to think about media.

I have lots of DVD and Blu-Ray discs along with lots of CD's.

I've been reading up on VideoHelp.com - Forum, Guides, Tools and hardware lists to gem up on codecs etcs.

So here is my plan :

For DVD's : Rip and use MakeMKV to wrap main movie/audio/subs into an MKV without re-encoding. I'm not too worried about HD space.

For Blu-Ray : Same as above i.e. leave in Blu-Ray - but wrap in MKV

For CD's : Rip and convert to FLAC

Will MediaPortal play MKV with DVD/Blu-Ray video in it? and will it play FLAC files for audio?

    Thanks in advance.

I use handbrake to encode my dvd's. It can even include subtitles into the mkv (but I never tried that)

You either have only a few BR's or an insanely huge Raid array if you want to store BR's. :D

As long as you have the Haali Matroska Splitter or the MP-HC mkv splitter installed, MediaPortal has no issues to play mkv's

FLAC works out of the box.
