I'm having a problem with tearing while using the internal player.

Happens with .avi as well as DVD .iso images and happens ONLY with the internal player. If I play the files with PowerDVD or Windows Media player, everything runs fine.

The tearing is visible whether I am using my BenQ monitor, or the Toshiba television.

I've tried using every decoder in the list, as well as playing with the Dynamic refresh rate settings, but no luck.

Several posts I've read of other people having the same issue, all point to turning on Aero in Vista and that seems to fix almost all of the problems.

My problem is that, I went the cheap route, and bought Vista Home Basic, which doesn't have Aero.... Anything else I can try to get the internal player to work better?

    REGEDIT
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ DWM \
    Change the value of the entry Composition to 1
    Change the value of CompositionPolicy to 0.
    Close REGEDIT
    Personalize the desktop - Window colour and appearance - select Aero

    Sadly that does not work for me. The settings you suggested SpudR were the default on my system.

    The google search I did had me changing Policy to 2. Tried that as well and no joy. In addition, some more reading seems to indicate that the registry changes (for the people it has worked for) only give you the Aero colours, but not Aero itself, which is what I assume MP really needs.

    Looks like I may have to shell out the $80.

    I run Vista Home Basic 32 - my reg key settings are:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM]
    "Composition"=dword:00000001
    "ColorizationOpaqueBlend"=dword:00000000
    "CompositionPolicy"=dword:00000002

    (reboot)

    I then select 'Windows Vista Standard' in 'Personalize the desktop - Window colour and appearance' - this is as close to the Aero desktop as you can get in Home Basic - you should see 'shaded' window colouring instead of 'flat' colouring.

    MP runs fine for me using EVR - on hardware less powerful than your system, and I play a lot of HD 1080i content to a 1080p display.

    You may need to re-run the 'Windows Experience Rating' checker to update the performance index i.e. to persuade Vista that the hardware is powerful enough to run the 'Aero' desktop e.g. my system score is 4.8

    Ah! That's something I had not seen mentioned anywhere else. I'll give that a shot when I get home tonight.

    I'd much rather use the internal player than PowerDVD with the script I had to create to get it to move to my TV automatically.

    Thanks again for trying to everyone for trying to help. I really appreciate it.

    enable the desktop window manager service ;)

    Good point - although it's supposed to run on 'automatic' (always on) normally anyway.

    e.g. "Restart the DWM by restarting the Desktop Windows Manager Session Manager service. This can be done in services.msc or by typing net stop uxsms and net start uxsms at command prompt."

    That did it!

    Thanks everyone.

    I don't notice much of a change in the appearance of the windows themselves, but the tearing is gone :)

    Unfortunately, in all my playing around, I appear to have broken something else, and now I can't play DVDs from .ISO

    I get a "UNABLE TO PLAY:VIDEO_TS.IFO" message.

    But it worked before, so I've gotta be able to get it to work again.

    The tearing was the most annoying part.

    Thanks again for all you help.
