After update, MediaPortal won't even start (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

I've got a Twinham DVB-T card which I frequently use with MediaPortal. I tend to update to the latest SVN about once a week. About a week ago I updated it, and it decided not to run anymore. I've un-installed it and gone back to 0.2.0.0, but it has no effect. I've updated to 204 and same. I've gone to the latest SVN and no change. I havn't installed any other software around the time the problem started.

Here's what's happening:

I can launch the first-time-use configuration after a clean install. It finds the TV card, finds 56 digital channels, and all seems well. I go to launch MediaPortal and it puts up the little status logo box and runs through a few steps. It gets as far as "Initializing Fonts" and stops. It doesn't go any further, but CPU usage is at 50%. If I close it in task manager and re-launch, it doesn't display the logo window but still sits at 50% CPU usage.

If, instead of running mediaportal I run the setup for it, there is no obvious change to the system except in the task manager it has Configuration.exe using 50% of the CPU.

I've left them for hours and neither does anything.

I've uninstalled mediaportal through the control panel, deleted the folder in c:/program files/, and scoured the registry to remove anything relevant there. I re-install a clean stable build, and it's the same story.

Anybody offer any help??

Hi Scott, welcome to the forums.

First, you'll probably get a lot more info if you post your system specs using the support template. There could be things specific to your isnatl that would give us a lot more clue.

Second, check out the logs, in Mediaportal/logs/mediaportal.log. After a failed startup attempt, check out the last few entries. That should give some valuable pointers to what the problem could be.

If you still can't work it out, post the log here so we can look over it.
My guess is you may have a corrupt database, but the error log and mediaportal log will help determine that.

There were some tv card definition issues in a couple of SVNs, but they'd be fixed with a reinstal, so I doubt that is what is getting you in trouble.

OK, looking at your MP log, the next step after initialising the fonts is to start up the plugins.
My guess is that you have a plugin that is no longer compatible with the new version of MP or maybe there is n issue with the fonts/skin you are using.

I know that this shouldn't be the case, since you have done a clean install, but are you sure you didn't install any new plugins since the update?

My recommendations now are to use the Blue Two skin if you aren't already. Delete the Fonts directory and all packed*.* files from that skin directory.
Remove any non-essential plugins and then see if you have any luck.

If that still doesn't work, then I have had success with Windows System Restore in the past. See if you can roll back to before the SVN that killed everything.

I think I'm on to something...

You note that the log shows it's dying at the loading fonts stage. Initialising fonts is the last thing it shows. So...

Before un-installing MP for the first time after the problem, I made a copy of the entire directory within Program Files (just in case).

Now, when I un-install and re-install MP, Under skin/bluetwo, there is no sub-directory for fonts. There was in the original installation, but not the re-installations. I assume this may be part of the problem??

Also, in a possibly-related issue, I've installed the SQL server, but when I attempt to install the new TV Server, the progress bar gets to about 95% done and then it just sits idle. I'm not sure if this may be related (Not sure how it would be related, other than the same computer having issues)...

I've tried with the latest SVN builds of MP and TVServer, and it doesn't seem to effect the situation.

It especially confuses me, however, that I can't even get the configuration program working! Anybody offer any thoughts on why that might be??

The fonts directory is kind of like the packed graphics files. It is created by MP on the first start up so that furture start ups and in program performance will be more efficient.
You can delete the fonts directory as well as the packed*.* files (when MP isn't running) and MP should just recreate them when it is restarted.
The fact that it isn't there means that MP isn't even getting to that stage. Considering the log dies just as the font creation is starting would indicate something is amiss there.

You also say that you are using the new TV server. It's possible that could be something to do with your trouble as well, since it is very early beta stage. I would probably recommend reverting back to the most stable MP and see if that helps. Uninstall the MP TV server and Client unless there is something crucial in the new version that you need.

Hi Marcus,

I've tried using the new tv server only after the older versions of MP didn't work.

Last night I did a cull through my hard drive removing all traces of MP I could find. I re-booted, and then installed it anew. It ran the first-time configuration and completed that okay. I then launched MP and it got to "initializing fonts" and stopped. I left it there all night, as it chewed through as much CPU as it could get its hands on, but by morning it hadn't moved a bit.

Only change I can think of to the system is that I've fairly recently upgraded the graphics drivers - I'll try rolling those back tonight, but I can't believe that would effect it like this.

As the MP problem appears related to the fonts, would you have any guess as to why the configuration program won't properly start up??

Nope - I rolled back the video drivers and no luck.

System restore wouldn't help as I've not set a restore point since... well, when did I buy this computer?? *gulp*

This is really frustrating - I really like Media Portal, but I'm locked out of using it now! Argh!!!!

Sorry for the delay but I'm afraid I'm out of ideas.

I guess there's a very slight chance that maybe a font that MP uses is corrupt, which explains the fact that the issue is so persistant, even after total MP removal and re-instal, but I don't hold a lot of hope for that being the answer.

Otherwise, maybe there is a directX issue or a problem with a codec. These are the only other things that should exist after a total nuke of all things MP.

My money would be on the fact that you will be performing a full reinstall of Windows some time very soon, sorry.
