Hello. My HTPC also doubles as my desktop. I simply switch over to TV-Out and start MediaPortal when I want to veg out and browse movies.
I have an ATI Remote Wonder Plus as my remote, and my video card is an nvidia 6600 with S-video going to my tv. I usually have to use the nview control panel to switch displays.
Anyhow, I wanted a way to use the power button on the remote to be able to toggle displays and start Media Portal. The software that comes bundled with the ATI remotes only allows overriding the A-F buttons, which wasn't great.
I found this software: http://rwkeymaster.sourceforge.net/
It lets you set up an action for both key down, and key up. Additionally, it'll only performs commands you set up, so its perfectly safe to leave running with MediaPortal going.
I figured this info might help someone else out who was trying to get the same functionality as me. I put up a few more details about the setup on my site: http://FFFF.ca/myhtpc/
