For anyone that is interested I have been using the Atlas data successfully in MediaPortal for a while now. The method I used is as follows:

got Atlas API key
requested access to Press Association data (now instant)
installed standard command line XMLTV
ran the configure for atlas (xmltv tv_grab_uk_atlas --configure)
ran a grab for atlas (for example xmltv tv_grab_uk_atlas --days 7 --output tvguide.xml --quiet)
told the XmlTv plugin in TV Server where to find the tvguide.xml
mapped the channels in the plugin (remembering to Save and rerun the Import)
scheduled the grab
This works perfectly, unless you try to grab any of the RTE channels, as they have accented characters in the channel display name and the XmlTv plugin does not like this. It is easily fixed by grepping the tvguide.xml, I will detail my method if anybody is interested. You should currently end up with an EPG for 419 tv/radio channels or whatever subset you chose in the configure.
