I'm not getting any audio at all when playing video (dvd, avi, wmv) through MP, though WMP and other external players work fine. Music also plays fine through MP.

After trying every possible combination of settings I could find, I installed ffdshow. My test video is windows media audio and video v7. Under the ffdshow configuration, these are enabled through libavcodec.dll, which exists in the ffdshow directory. The "merit" settings for ffdshow audio and video codecs are maxed out, and the settings for audio/video codecs in MPConfig are set to ffdshow. Rendering device is "default directsound device".

Yet still no audio. I have OSD turned on in ffdshow but see no OSD when I play video in MP. I guess that means that ffdshow is not being used? Why not?

Can anyone produce a step-by-step guide to making ffdshow work in MP?

Or better yet, how to just make audio work? I'm not trying to do anything fancy here... just watch some video... but making that happen in MP requires pretty extensive knowledge of directx/show/sound, codecs, graphs/splitters/muxers/pins, and the alphabet soup of ac3/aac/spdif. (I'm using spdif-out. No idea what the rest means :) )

Troubleshooting tips would be much appreciated... e.g., is there any way to make MP log what codecs its trying to use?

a-ha. The answer, boys and girls, is to add MediaPortal Setup to the list of ffdshow-aware apps. (It's in the ffdshow audio config.) It's not enough to just leave it off the exclude list, it has to be on the include list.

Oddly, I still get no audio in MP. I have all the audio OSD stuff turned on for ffdshow, and it is exactly the same in MP as it is in GraphEdit, where it plays perfectly.

This isn't how I wanted to spend my day.
