Hello,

I've been searching through your forum and the french one and so far i'm unable to solve my problem.

I'd like to turn all my cd's into .ape files (audio monkey codec) in order to have all my music written on a hard drive and benefit from that on my futur htpc.
To listen to that i'd like to use Foobar. In order to that, i activated the Foobar plugin in MP setup, in the Foobar plugin setup i've added .ape in the files that have to be supported by Foobar, and i've added as well .ape in "music database" in the file music in MP setup. Nevertheless, when i want to launch a file .ape when MP is on, nothing happens, and even worse when i leave MP, start it again and go back to the file where my .ape are, all tags have disappeared and "unknow" is written for all those files and of course it's still impossible to launch them.

Just to let you know, when i use foobar alone (apart from MP) everything works correctly.

I tried as well with files encoded in FLAC and the same happens.

For information:
- Windows XP SP
- Athlon Barton sp2
- ATI Radeon 9800
- Creative Audigy
- HDD 120GO + HDD 40 GO Maxtor
- MP 0.1.3.0
- Audio CD extracted with Exact Audio Copy and turned into .ape with Audio Monkey (And FLAC 1.1.2)

Thank you for having a look at this problem ... and good luck !

    Hi Heartland

Unfortunately not knowing anything about ape files cannot help, but hopefully someone with a similar setup to yourself will answer in the next few days.
Would ask what are the advantages using ape files over mp3 which is what i use for music files.

    Hi Ray,

Contrary to MP3, Ape compression is lossless, it means that when uncompressed, the file you have encoded in Ape won't lose any part of its first integrity. If you have encoded a Wav file in Ape when you will read it (using for example Foobar) it will sound as good as your initial Wav file. Rate of compression using "Audio Monkey" is about 55%, so it allows you to encod all your cds in a good quality (since you don't loss information) and keep everything in one hard drive, which is quite convinient when you creat a HTPC.

    I hope i have been clear :)

    Bye

    Hi.

I use ape for MP, and it work fine for me, except for the annoying "unknown" file bug. Ape is not fully supported by MP, which is causing the "unknown". (or so I've been told)
Can you play ape files through foobar alone? If you can, you've forgotten to setup foobar with the http-control plugin. You can find this when you setup the foobar plugin in MP setup, theres a link to the plugin. Then setup the http in foobar to...

Ape sounds great, I think maybe better than waw, comparede to the cd. Maybe it reads better from the HD than from the cd?

    Hope it helps.

    Per.

    Hi Per,

Thanks for your reply ... you were right i hadn't configure correctly the Http-control plugin ... and now everything works correctly ... except the "unknown" problem ... i hope it will be taken into account in the future ...

So far i haven't notice any difference between CD or APE on HDD ... but i'm still working on my pc and i have just ordered components to create my HTPC ... maybe i will see the difference when everything will be plugged on my amplificator ...
By the way, how can you notice difference between CD and APE ever since it's supposed to be digitaly the same thing ?

    Bye

    There is no "unknow problem"..

By default foobar removes! IDv2 Tags and writes his own ape tags to your files. (There is a core option "block all tag updates")

Guess what Tag Version MP evaluates? Correct...

    Hi RTV,

Thanks for your reply ... but it's not clear to me ... apparently Foobar removes tags from the files read and that's why it creats the "unknow" problem ... but what's the problem with MP ... and what am i supposed to do to get correct tag

I haven't been able to find the core option "block all tag updates" in Foobar ...

This is on the config page "database" ;-)

FB2k removes the IDv2 Tag. MP only reads V2 Tags. Therefore files without V2 Tags are unknown.

There is a little default setting problem in MP which makes things worse: Please change your music view for filename to %filename%. Now you can at least browse tag-less files.

    You should:
    1. change your settings.
    2. use FB2k (or even better: a decent tagging tool like thegodfather) to reapply V2 Tags to your files.
    3. rescan your MP music database.
