Automatic access to network folders? (1 Viewer)

I've recently installed a home server on which all my media files sit (music, movies, etc). I've noticed that this causes issues with my HTPC; MediaPortal doesn't automatically access the server because this is password protected. When I reboot, MP cannot access my music files, TV Series does not find any files, and My Movies has issues too. My workaround is to first go into my server folders via windows explorer, which prompts for the username and password. Once I've entered this, everything is fine (until I reboot!).

I can't see a way of entering this logon data into MP setup anywhere. Is there a better workaround so I can automatically access the files on my server? Perhaps running a script to auomatically logon to the server at reboot?

I've had the same problem, and the only solution I found was to have the same username/password on the server as I do on the mediasenter.

You can get Windows to log you on automatically, works for me and I have the same username/pwd as on my [Samba] server.

(OOI, do you actually need your server files to be password protected?)

It should be possible to tell windows vista to remember the network drive user/pass and to login automaticly. Strange that this does not work.

A workaround is indeed to create a user/pass on the htpc with permissions on the server. And of course you do not want to type in your user and pass every time the htpc is started, so:
click Start and type netplwiz in the Search field and then press Enter. Click Continue when the User Account Control window appears. From the User Accounts window that appears, verify that your own user account is selected. Clear the Users must enter a username and password to use this computer option and click OK. Provide the password for your user account when prompted and restart your computer. Vista will automatically log on with your user account.

an other workaround is to create a batch script (.bat) on the htpc with something like:
    net use <DRIVE LETTER>\\network_computer_name\shared_name PASSWORD /user\DOMAIN\USERNAME /p:y
and run it every time the htpc starts (startup folder in startmenu?)

    good luck!

    1. You can get Windows to log you on automatically, works for me and I have the same username/pwd as on my [Samba] server.

    2. (OOI, do you actually need your server files to be password protected?)

    1. Could you tell me how this works?
    2. I need password protection becuase this is one condition Windows Home Server has if you want to setup remote accessing, which I do.

Can you tell me how this works?

Eehh, the only thing i do to make this work in vista is
    1. go to the server folder via explorer ( \\server_name\folder )
    2. windows then askes me for my user/pass and the option to 'remember credentials'
    2. right click the folder and map it as network drive
    3. then assign drive letter (and there is an option for 'use different user credentials' (perhaps helpfull in your situation)

    good luck

I don't know how they did it for Win7, but for Vista atleast Home Premium is not able to store network passwords, you need Business for that.

How about creating a 2nd account on your server that has no password?
But I also believe that the Win7 guide on this forum had a tip on how to make it so that you don't need to enter password on logon:

I went with your first suggestion and created the same username/password on the Media PC as on WHS. This decision was partly helped by the fact that I cannot reliably wake my Media PC from S3 shutdown, so I've decided to leave it permanently on. Typing a password is therefore not a problem.

One major issue I create here was that my user settings had to be recreated for the new user... and becuase I deleted the old username too quickly, I didn't have any backups to use For example, the iMon remote control settings disappeared. Looks like a long wekend in tinkering with MediaPortal again...
