In MediaCentre, recording and scheduling is handled by an external process.

The advantgages of this are:

• MediaCentre does not have to be running to record
• If MediaCentre crashes (which happens alot) it won't affect the recording
• The external recording process can have a higher priority than MediaCentre itself

Is this how MediaPortal works?
If not, is this planned for a future release?

Is this how MediaPortal works?

Yes - if you use the client-server version (TVE3) of the MediaPortal TV engine. The standard version of Mediaportal uses TVE2, which does not do what you described.
